DIY Cute Easter Dress

Are you on a budget and wondering what you are going to do about an Easter dress for the little one? Have no fear the Pillow Case Dress is here. You may thinking this sounds awful and frumpy or hard to make, but it is so cute and easy. It takes beginner sewing skills and a little elbow grease.

I started making these for friends kids as birthday presents. Originally they were made out of actual pillow cases or potato sacks. If you have a pretty pillow case use that, if not get a yard of fabric and you are on your way.

I have snagged the directions from a blog called A ROOM SOMEWHERE. http://www.aroomsomewhere.net/2007/07/pillowcase-dress-tutorial.html

I have included the steps I use which vary slightly. Either way I hope you are inspired to create your own version for your little lady or for a present.

Steps to Make a Pillow Case Dress
Needed:
1 yard of fabric or a pillow case
1 yard of ribbon or double folded binding
Thread or Sewing Adhesive

  • If you are using an actual pillow case you will need to cut off the top so both sides of the pillow case are open. If you are using fabric measure from the child's neck to where you want it to fall then add 2 inches (this will be the length) it should be the width of an average pillow case.

  • Now that the fabric is cut you will need to put the two right sides together and sew the sides ( not the top or bottom) it will look like pillow case you cut the top off of.

  • Lay the pillow case or fabric flat. You can either use another dress in the girl's size as a guide in cutting the arm holes, or measure from the shoulder to 1/2 inch under the arm pit. For a toddler it will be 1 inch in from the side and 3 inches down. You will want to mark the arm hole to look like a "J".

  • Once the arm holes are cut you can either use ribbon, binding or fold the fabric over to stop the fabric from fraying. Sew the fabric over or sew the ribbon or binding to the dress. Start at the top of armhole and continue all the way around the "J"

  • Once the armholes are finished you will fold the top of the dress over 1/2 to 1 inch depending on the thickness of the ribbon you bought.

  • After the top is sewn attach a safety pin to the ribbon (cut into two equal pieces) and thread through the space you just created. One ribbon through the front and one through the back so they can tie on each side.

  • If you started with a pillow case you dress in done, if you are using fabric you will need to fold the bottom over 1/2 inch then a 1/2 inch again and sew a seam to finish the bottom of the dress.

  • (If you can't sew you can replace the sewing steps with sewing adhesive like stitch witch, just ask for it at the fabric store)
